Age Advantage Essentials: Career Practitioner Training Workshops
Purpose:
- To enable career practitioners and Targeted Initiative for the Older Worker workshop facilitators to work with older worker clients using the Age Advantage and Age Advantage Essentials Facilitator Guides to help clients move toward their preferred life and career vision, whether employment or self-employment
- To provide orientation and fundamental insight specific to working with older clients in the context of the Older Worker program
Issues & Barriers Discussed:
- Facilitator/career practitioner attitudes and beliefs about ageing –
- Older Worker client attitudes and beliefs about ageing
- A need to be aware of the diversity of ageing—not everyone ages in the same way, or has the same attitudes
- Understanding what ageing issues, challenges, barriers the client perceives as reality
- Ageism in Perspective
- Generational perspectives and preferences
- Social status changes
- Economic set backs & opportunities
- Coping with loss, changes to job or health issues, etc.
- The power of positive inquiry
- Discovery - What do you, as a career practitioner/facilitator bring to this life stage and task and how it relates to the Older Worker?
- Dream – What would you like to happen in this life stage?
- Design – Dialogue what should be - Who do you need to talk to about it?
- Destiny – Create what will be - How will you create what you would like/prefer at this stage in life?
What skills are required to effectively deliver the Age Advantage Transition Program to the Older Worker?
- Facilitator self awareness regarding:
- Ageism
- Older Worker barriers & issues
- Transition process/late adult development
- Entrepreneurial problem solving, goal setting & planning
- Appropriate, non-directive, cooperative Facilitation styles
- Coordinating / Facilitating / administering an Older Worker program for the first time
- Advertising, application process, screening applicants, creating groups, scheduling daily curricula, introducing professional development days for participants e.g. First Aid/CPR; WHMIS; Conflict resolution, etc.
