You may have heard about a concept called essential skills – the skills needed for work, learning and life.

They are the ‘classic’ skills that we expect the education system to ‘take care of’ and develop in our youth – reading, numeracy, writing, communication, working with others, technological skills. Without these essential skills, one cannot function in society and one’s personal development is hindered and limited by the absence of these skills. Clearly essential skills are much-needed skills.

But if one were to stop with basic essential skills,the development of our youth and society would fall terribly short.
